The 1º de Mayo Foundation begins a new stage with the aim of playing a decisive role in the ideological debate that is taking place in Spanish society and that will largely define the model that is implemented in the coming decades. As a result of the merger with two other long-standing organizations such as FOREM and ISTAS, mandated by the 11th Confederal Congress of Workers' Commissions, May Day reinforces its organizational structure and establishes a roadmap as a 'laboratory of ideas' that transcends the organization itself to gain relevance in the social debate. The new project was presented this Thursday by the general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo, and by the president of the Foundation, Fernando Lezcano. Both highlighted the strategic role that May Day is called to play in the fight for cultural hegemony against the “false arguments” of the extreme right, in Sordo's words. And at the same time serve as an “ethical reference” in the defense of solidarity, justice and equality, said Lezcano.
At a time of strong citizen disaffection towards institutions, CCOO wants to value its union assets and serve as a spearhead in the dispute of ideas and the cultural battle. Among its star proposals, May Day, will carry out a citizen macro-survey every two years, a kind of 'labor CIS' that reflects the state of opinion of the working class.
They also want to launch 'the Observatory of union affiliation and representation', which will allow qualitative studies to be carried out on the union's affiliation and representativeness trends. In the initiatives planned for this year within the framework of the union's 'memory', the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Process 1001 is contemplated with an exhibition at the National Library and the publication of a book.Likewise, Julián Ariza's memoirs will be presented. The May Day Foundation will also have an Advisory Council in which historical trade unionists such as Nicolás Sartorius, Julián Ariza, Antonio Baylos or Ramón Górriz, among others, will participate, as well as other leading personalities in the cultural world such as Joaquín Estefanía, Elvira Lindo or Luis García Montero.
