Adena Kaju was walking along Route 201 in hopes of finding her sister, Missa, whom she hadn't seen for over two years now since she'd been kidnapped. She was quite excited about this, walking as quickly as possible on her way to Tangelo Island, where she hoped to find Missa as it would be more likely there if she asked around and looked in the Pokémon Centre. Her Torchic, Rivus, was loving this. She had longed to leave the lab and get out in the open, and was running about and exploring everything in sight. She would fall behind as she scrambled about in a bush, then raced ahead as she tried running as fast as she could, which was quite fast. At first Adena had stopped every time her Pokémon fell behind and ran to keep up, but now she knew that Rivus wouldn't let her trainer go out of sight and so kept walking.
Rivus thought this journey was terribly fun so far. There was so much on this route to explore. She loved her new trainer already, just as she liked pretty much everyone she met. The Torchic wished that a Pokémon would appear so that she could battle it and gain a friend, or that Adena would suddenly learn to speak to Pokémon. That would be really good. She knew this wouldn't happen, but there was a decent chance that they'd see a wild Pokémon at some point.
Adena, meanwhile, was wondering if they'd see her sister at any point. That wasn't so likely, hence why her plan was to head over to Tangelo Island. She wasn't sure how she felt about meeting a wild Pokémon, since that could hold them up but it would also be a good chance to see how strong Rivus was. [/blockquote]

Wild Shiny Mudkip Appeared!Up ahead on the road there was an unconious Pok?mon laying out in the middle of the road. A few Tailows were pecking at it's unconious form. It was a shiny Mudkip. And it looked like it had been poisoned by something. It was just laying there knocked out, moaning in pain as the Tailows pecked at it. There was about three Tailows pecking at poor Mudkip. Would Adena help the Mudkip out?

Adena saw the Taillows, thinking at first that they must have found some food. However, as she drew closer, she noticed that the pink form they were pecking at was moving, and moaning faintly in pain too. She gasped, motioning for Rivus to remain still and silent. That poor Pokémon - it looked like a Mudkip - needed medical attention, and fast! She needed to get the Taillows to get away. She supposed she could try scaring them off, but if these Taillow would continue pecking a poisoned, barely conscious Mudkip like that, she had a feeling they wouldn't be easily pursuaded to run off. Rivus was her only Pokémon, so if they tried to battle her, she might be in trouble, but she could hardly let this happen.
"OK, Rivus, Growl as fiercely as possible to try and startle and scare them while I try and get Mudkip," Adena murmured to her Torchic softly so the Taillows wouldn't hear. The Fire type nodded in response, looking determined but a little afraid. She moved stealthily closer, until she judged it the right time to open her little beak and let out as fearsome a snarl as she could. This was a little scary for her, but she tried to put on a brave face. In truth, she was a little excited at the idea of a little adventure, helping someone in need, and perhaps even getting a chance to battle. It was just a shame that she potentially had three or so opponents.
Adena moved in closer to the Mudkip, trying to ignore the Taillows and focus on her aim here. If it weren't for its moaning, the poor thing might have been unconscious, or worse. She rushed forwards and lifted Mudkip gently, shielding it with her body in case the Taillows tried to attack it again. [/blockquote]

The poor Mudkip continued to moan, but its cries got quieter as it got weaker from the relentless pecking of the Tailow trio. It was strange. He thought he heard a human voice... At the Torchic's Growl, the smallest of the Taillows let out an alarmed squawk and flew off. The other two merely looked over at the Torchic and her owner behind her. One looked a little uneasy and hung back. The other looked like it wanted to fight. Perhaps the other Taillow would fight later or perhaps it would be frightened off? Time would tell. When Adena ran forward and rescued the Mudkip, the one that looked like it wanted to fight squawked indignantly and flapped, clearly annoyed that she'd spoiled its fun. The other continued to hang back. <Oi! Who said you could interfere?> the bolder one asked. It launched itself into the air and at the Torchic, using Peck. •Rivus, Torchic •Level 5 •Scratch, Growl HP: 18/21
ooc// I don't really know, either, there's probably a calculator to calculate how much HP a Pokémon starts with, but after that you just make up how much they lose/gain each turn, I think.
ic// Adena was pleased that one Taillow had flown off and that Rivus appeared to have accepted the other Taillow's challenge by means of getting rather angry when her feathers were ruffled by a nasty Peck attack, but te Taillow that had hung back worried her more. It appeared to be harmless, but who knew when it would attack? She watched it warily as she continued to lean protectively over the wounded Mudkip as she fumbled in her bag to find the Full Heal she knew was in there. Those wouldn't heal the shiny's HP or wounds or emotions, but would at least cure any status condition - poisoning included. She found it and sprayed the Water type until the entire bottle was used up, hopin it would work. She made a mental note to ask how he'd managed to poisoned by Taillows. Clearly something else had hurt him.
Rivus snarled as the Taillow's quick response to her Growl startled her, pain from a strong, practiced Peck exploding on the side of her head. She shook herself, smoothing down her feathers and spitting a little smoke in her rage. She didn't know what to do... Weren't trainers supposed to give orders? She was about to retaliate anyway when she heard a, "Erm, try a - oh, where is it? - Scratch attack!" Adena then continuing the search for the Full Heal which she apparantly manage to find. Fair enough that she was preoccupied, Mudkip looked in a pretty bad way.
Lunging at Taillow, Rivus' talons itches to slash the bullying bird and teach it a lesson while protecting the victimised Mudkip. She could move her feet surprisingly well, her clawed foot rising high in a ninjaesque slashing kick. ~Why were you hurting Mudkip?~

Male Taillow, level 5, Guts Peck, Growl, Focus Energy HP: 15/20 -1 Attack <Why not?> The Taillow called. <It's so weak and bright pink! It looks so silly. OW!> The strong ninja-scratch hit him hard but he wasn't about to give up so soon. He just got more angry. The other Taillow looked uneasy. <We should go.> <What are you kidding me?> The bolder Taillow replied. <We can take this little chicken!> He used Focus Energy and concentrated, improving his chance of a critical hit. Next he took off at the Torchic and used Peck again. The other Taillow just stood there, fidgeting. Meanwhile, the shiny Mudkip had recovered from it's poisoning and but was still weak. It lay resting in Adena's arms, looking wearily over at the ensueing battle. ooc: Found a stat calc. and some stuff on damage. I'm gonna try and give it a go. I'm also retconning the health of the wild Taillow since I've found a proper stat for it.

HP: 13/21
Wait, what? The Taillows had decided to pick on Mudkip because he looked weak and silly? That was absolutely ridiculous! ~You hurt him like that just because he looked silly? How stupid are you? Don't you know that judging someone on their appearance is very dumb? You never know how strong they are or who they've got fighting for them!~
[/color] Rivus replied to the Taillow, using the energy that usually made her a hyperactive little ball of fuzzy cheerfulness to fuel her anger and battling skills. She was catching her breath back after using the Scratch, not used to battling yet, while Taillow used his Focus Energy. The Peck proved to be a very damaging hit. It was perfect. The only bad thing about it was that it was from Rivus' opponent rather than Rivus. The Torchic was inept at dodging, it seemed, skidding backwards with the force of a Focus Energy-induced critical hit. Adena winced. That looked quite painful. She looked at Taillow, unsure of what to do. That attack had been more powerful than a Peck without a lowered attack stat would have been, and she wasn't exactly the happiest person about that. "Use a Scratch when he's not expecting it, while he's still up close. It might be tricky as you'll still be recovering," she warned her Pokémon not to try anything that might make her hurt herself. Rivus saw Taillow close to her and, although panting, lashed out with another Scratch. This one was weaker than before as she hadn't caught her breath back from the Peck, which had done a nice job of winding her. She just hoped the attack would hit, which it had a high chance of doing so as it would be unexpected. She did feel a little giddy from the sudden effort through the pain, however, which she took note of as she could work on it and do her best to try and avoid for the rest of the duration of this battle.[/size][/blockquote]

10/20 -1 Attack The Taillow laughed for quite a while back in the Torchic's face. It obviously did not understand her perspective on life. <You're dumb! You're just a cushy little birdy that's been raised by humans for your whole life. You don't know anything.> he laughed. <Your owner is dumb too. She just yelled out loads of instructions so I know what you're going to do next! That's the advantage of being wild. You don't know what we're going to do next.> He turned around and waggled his tail in Torchic's direction. He turned around in time to dodge the Scratch but when it came to the moment to dodge he seemed to have forgotten to do so. The other Taillow covered his face with a wing in embarrassment. <You'll pay for that!> he snarled, using Growl and then flying at the Torchic with another Peck. However in his anger, his aim was slightly off.

HP: 10/21 - 1 Attack
ooc// Oh, that damage calculator, I wouldn't bother using it as it wouldn't account for the differences you can make in RPing like where the attack hits or how tired the user is.
ic// If Rivus had had eyebrows, she would have raised one after Taillow's little speech. Yes, Adena had called out the orders and so from this Taillow knew what she was going to do next. Still, it was possible for her to at some point learn how to give orders without the other side hearing - they managed that in higher up battles, and if not then it made the battles more exciting as it was easier to think ahead. Rivus knew that Taillow would either use Peck, Growl or Focus Energy as those were his only attacks, and would probably use Peck every turn as it was his only offensive move. Simple as that; you didn't need a trainer's orders to work out what a wild Pokémon would do.
The Growl lowered her attack, making the two Pokémon equal in that stat. She knew this would make her attacks less powerful, but supposed she should just work harder if she was worried about that. She saw the Peck coming and could see that through his anger and embarrassment, his aim was poorer than usual. She could see that it might still hit, however, and so tried to dodge, ending up just barely not achieving the dodge, Taillow's beak scraping down her side as the move just caught her.
At least it hadn't been the full thing, she told herself. She was also annoyed at what Taillow had said about her trainer being stupid, and with that in mind used a Scratch attack before Adena could give her an order. The Scratch wasn't incredibly well judged, a little weaker than normal and not actually all that likely to hit anyway.

7/20 -1 Attack The Taillow grinned triumphantly as his attack worked. He hadn't been expecting it to hit when he realised he was a bit off course. He also still thought he had an advantage because he didn't realise that the Torchic and her owner had sussed out roughly what level he was and from that and what they'd seen, his moves. He swerved to try and avoid the retaliating Torchic and succeeded only in missing the main part of the attack and still catching the end bit. <You turned into my move just then doofus!> he snorted. Whirling around, he growled again and went for another peck. <Hey you! Join in and we'll easily win.> he called to his fellow Taillow. The other Taillow looked uneasy but crept a little closer, still deciding whether or not to participate. ooc: Well it is a little complicated too ^^

HP: 6/10 -2 Attack
Another Growl left Rivus a little concerned about the continued lowering of her attack stat. She liked to feel that she had a lot of energy and was in control at all times, which was why she was usually so energetic and eccentric. Now, however, it was not such a good feeling as the second Growl left her aware that any further attacks she tried to land would be weaker. Not only this, but Taillow was rushing at her in a diving, whirling Peck and she wasn't sure she could dodge.
"Use a Growl to even your attacks again and meet the Peck with a Tackle," Adena's order was called a little softer this time, partly because she guessed that Mudkip would have a splitting headache after all that and partly because she hoped that Taillow wouldn't hear if she spoke quieter. She was a little worried about the other Taillow; if it joined in the fight, Rivus would be weak and easily defeated. The best she could do them would be to shield Mudkip as best as she could. She had no other Pokémon besides and Old Amber, but that had yet to be revived.
Rivus obeyed the orders, feeling just a little more comfortable about her lowered attack now that she knew Taillow would be level with her on that front once more. She rushed forwards in a Tackle. This way, both attacks would definately hit as they were both trying to reach the same spot. The only problem here was how much damage the Tackle would do compared to the Peck. The Peck struck a decent blow, knocking off a good chunk of Rivus' HP.

0/20 -2 Attack As the bolder Taillow flew at the Torchic and the Torchic began running at the Taillow to tackle it, the uneasy Taillow had had enough of watching through his feathers as he held his wings in front of his eyes which he'd started doing recently. The bolder Taillow had ended up done this before and it hadn't ended well for him yet he still attacked like this. It hadn't ended well for his opponent either but that wasn't the point. It was essentially a suicide flight. <Sorry man I'm going.> he said, taking flight and quickly leaving the scene to go join up with the other Taillow that had run off earlier. As he rose into the air, behind him the bolder Taillow and leader of the trio collided beak first into the tackling Torchic and was thrown backwards. He fell back a few feet and slammed into the ground, instantly fainting. Rivus gained 2 levels! Capture or leave? In Adena's arms, the Shiny Mudkip looked decidedly happier at the Taillow Trio's defeat. It nuzzled Adena's arm a little, too weak to express its happiness any other way. It had decided once it was healed to try asking Adena if it could join her team.

Adena was please that she had won her first battle, but her priorities were with the injured Mudkip right now, rather than her defeat. Rivus felt the surge if energy that gaining two levels brought as she walked back to Adena with a beaming smile. She looked at her trainer, then looked pointedly at the fainted bird. She wanted to see what her trainer would do with the Pokémon; she might choose to catch it, but if not she would make sure that Adena knew to put a fainted Pokémon in a safe place to recover.
Adena looked at the Taillow, considering her options here. She could catch him or leave him to recover himself. She could teach him not to behave like this if she caught him, and she could do with another team member, but when it really got down to it, this Taillow would not be of much use to her. Being a trainer wasn't all about collecting a million different Pokémon, to her it meant gathering together a group of Pokémon that it would be useful for both her and the Pokémon to be partners. In this case, Taillow wouldn't be an ideal Pokémon due to his temperment, and he probably wouldn't enjoy being with a trainer and havin to take orders, plus it simply wasn't practical with Mudkip around from how he had treated Mudkip before.
Decision made, Adena lifted Taillow gently and placed him in a high, sturdy branch hidden by leaves and ivy. She made sure nothing unwanted would be able to find him, then ensured he couldn't fall out before lifting up Mudkip and carrying him in her arms as she walked towards the port leading to the next town, hurrying so that she reach there before anything too bad happened to Mudkip. If she hurried, she might be able to make it by the first ferry tomorrow morning. [/blockquote]
